How to properly care for your clothes to make them last longer

Looking after your clothes

In a world of fast fashion, it’s easy to replace clothing when it shows signs of wear. However, taking good care of your clothes not only saves money but also reduces waste and helps you build a sustainable wardrobe. By following a few simple practices, you can significantly extend the life of your clothing and keep each piece looking fresh and well-maintained.

1. Wash less and wash wisely

One of the simplest ways to prolong the life of your clothes is to wash them less frequently. Each wash cycle wears down fibres, fades colours, and affects the shape of garments, especially in items like jeans, sweaters, and delicate fabrics. If an item doesn’t smell or isn’t visibly dirty, consider airing it out instead of washing it. Spot cleaning minor stains is another easy way to keep clothes fresh between washes.

When you do wash your clothes, be mindful of the settings. Use cold water whenever possible, as hot water can cause shrinkage and wear down fabric faster. Choose gentle cycles for delicate items and avoid overloading the machine, which can strain seams and increase wrinkling.

2. Be mindful of drying methods

Drying clothes in high heat can cause shrinkage, weaken fibres, and lead to pilling. For most clothing, it’s best to air dry or hang items to dry. Lay delicate items like knitwear and wool flat on a towel to prevent stretching and maintain their shape.

If you do use a dryer, stick to a low-heat setting and avoid over-drying, which can make fabrics feel stiff and brittle. For items like jeans and jackets, consider skipping the dryer altogether and air-dry to maintain the fit and texture. Tumble drying is also fine for some items, but removing clothes while they’re still slightly damp can help reduce wrinkles and shrinkage.

3. Storage

Proper storage plays a big role in keeping clothes looking their best. Use high-quality, padded hangers for items that hang to prevent stretching and misshaping in the shoulders. Fold heavier items, like sweaters, as hanging can cause them to lose their shape over time. Always fasten buttons and zippers to keep garments from snagging on each other in the closet.

4. Pay attention to fabric care labels

The care label provides essential information on how to handle each garment. Some items may require dry cleaning, hand washing, or a specific temperature range for washing and drying. Following these guidelines prevents unintentional damage like shrinkage, colour bleeding, or weakened fabric.

5. Repair, don’t discard

Taking the time to mend small issues can greatly extend the life of your clothing. Repairing a popped button, reinforcing a loose seam, or patching a small hole can keep an item wearable and save you from buying a replacement. Simple sewing skills, like stitching up a small tear, can make a big difference. For larger repairs or alterations, consider visiting a tailor—especially for higher-quality garments worth the investment.
